A current campaign that is of particular interest to us now is the plight of citizens, particularly miners, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Coltan, a metal that is used to make cellular phones, is mined almost exclusively in that country; miners there are treated unjustly and oppressively by Western companies, and foreign revenue is contributing to the plight of a population rocked by civil war. We have been assisting local Member of Parliament and member of the Human Promise's advisory Board, the Hon. Irwin Cotler, in gaining support for a petition to Parliament to rectify this situation.
