Natural disasters have played a very unfortunate role over the course of human history. Many homes, communities and lives are destroyed each year by various natural disasters. China, Chile, Haiti and New Zealand are but a few of the countries that have recently been devastated by natural disasters. All around the world, people need our help. It is the duty and the intention of the Human Promise Disaster Relief Fund to provide that aid to the places and people in need.
In 2008, a terrible earthquake killed over 70,000 people and caused untold damage in Sichuan Province, China. The Human Promise, in conjunction with the Quebec Jewish Congress, did its part to come to the aid of these victims. A donation of $5,000 was made to the Su Chi Foundation, a Chinese-Canadian association that in turn gave the money to the areas and individuals that needed it the most.
In 2010, another terrible earthquake devastated the nation of Haiti. The Human Promise joined with the rest of the world in assisting the victims of this terrible disaster. We worked in collaboration with FRESH Entertainment to host an event, the proceeds from which were donated to the Red Cross.
The Disaster Relief Fund was recently created by the Human Promise. Our goal is to provide as much help as possible to developing areas of the world that have been devastated by natural disasters, whether that is through awareness, monetary aid or hands-on support. Our goal is to raise awareness about the real damage and devastation that these disasters can cause. Through presentations in high schools throughout Montreal we plan on further educating these students about the ongoing suffering in countries such as Haiti, and their constant need for help and support.
The Human Promise Disaster Relief Fund will also be organizing a fund raiser party, along with other fund raisers, in order to donate the proceeds to the to the rebuilding of damaged communities. Over the course of the next few months, our committee will be focusing on funding hospitals, schools and orphanages in Haiti. Although a year has passed since the high-magnitude earthquake, Haiti still needs to rebuild, and they still need our help.
Teenagers throughout Canada are encouraged to start their own projects (such as sporting tournaments and events) in association with the Human Promise. We also encourage you to hop on board one of our ongoing projects! We need to help the world in order to make it a better place. As Harry Chapin wrote "Our lives are to be used and thus to be lived as fully as possible, and truly it seems that we are never so alive as when we concern ourselves with other people."
